Windwood's outreach services are provided in homes throughout Charleston and Dorchester Counties. Windwood has dedicated eight full time outreach staff; working seven days a week, to improve the lives of children and families in our community.
Our Goals Are To: Prevent child abuse and neglect, heal broken family structures, and strengthen the community in which you work, live, and raise your family.
- Aid families in securing a safe, healthy, nurturing environment where children are loved and respected by their primary caregivers.
- Provide in-home interventions that empower families with the resources they need to become self-sufficient in their daily lives.
- Educate families to navigate the social service system, and connect them with medical care options, counseling, job training, child care, and parenting education classes that is available to them.
The Strengthening Families Program
The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a science-based family skills training program designed to increase resilience and reduce risk factors for behavioral, emotional, academic and social problems. SFP builds on protective factors by improving family relationships, parenting skills, and improving the youth social and life skills. Windwood has staff that is ready to provide this curriculum to families in your school, your church, or anywhere families gather to enrich their lives and the lives of their children.
The Strengthening Families Program has been found effective in reducing risk factors and increasing protective and resilience factors. The most immediate results are improvements in children’s pro-social behaviors, mental status, and grades combined with reductions in aggression, violent behaviors, and substance use. Longitudinal follow-ups find reductions in alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs after up to five years.
Parents will earn to increase desired behaviors in children by using attention and rewards, clear communication, effective discipline, substance use education, problem solving and limit setting according to the Strengthening Families Program curriculum. Children learn effective communication, understanding feelings, social skills, problem solving, resisting peer pressure, consequences of substance use, and compliance with parental rules. Families engage in structured family activities, practice therapeutic child play, conduct family meetings, learn communication skills, practice effective discipline, reinforce positive behaviors in each other, and plan family activities together.
