Windwood Farm School:
Windwood Farm believes that every resident has the ability to learn. With access to resources, materials, and tools that fit their needs and learning styles, each child has a unique opportunity to achieve success in their academic endeavors. A Charleston County School District teacher oversees the academic program in each classroom. Support staff from both Windwood Farm and the school district assist with the provision of an individualized education environment for each child. One of the most significant characteristics of the campus school is its' ability to enable children who were deemed unreachable or unable to learn in other school settings to become successful students.
The classes offer the residents the chance to do hands-on work as well as to learn at their own pace. The Windwood Farm property lends itself to science experiments, environmental education, and nature observations. There are many opportunities for field trips around the campus. The rich and colorful background of the local area lends itself to unique history classes.
Each child has an individualized education plan that guides the course of his goals and educational expectations for the academic year.
Clinicians are available to students, both on a scheduled basis and at times of crises. Windwood Farm also provide certified recreation therapy specialists to complement the academic curriculum.
As soon as the child has proven his ability to achieve academic success while maintaining appropriate behaviors in the classroom, our education team provides services that prepare him for the transition back into a community school. Several children who reside at Windwood Farm attend community schools during their placement here.
A special thank-you goes out to the Sertoma Club of Charleston for their assistance with the construction costs for our schoolhouse, and their ongoing support.
